Prevalence of Hypertension in Diabetic Patients in Sari, Iran

Abstract: Diabetes mellitus is a common disease which characterized by hyperglycemia and carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism dysfunction. It can cause failure in kidney, eye, CNS and cardiovascular system. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of hypertension and its complications in diabetic patients. This cross sectional study was done diabetic patients, referred to diabetes center of Imam Khomeini Hospital from 2002-2003. All of the patients information such as demographic and laboratory data, blood pressure and complications were studied. Statistical analysis of collected data was done by SPSS and descriptive statistical tests. A total of 700 (39% male and 61% female) patients with age of 55.2±12.5 years were studied. Also 95.7% were type 2 diabetes. The mean BMI was 27.6±5.3. The, mean duration of disease was 9.8±6.6 years and 63.3% have positive familial history. In this study, 67% had hypertension (systolic pressure = 140 mmHg and diastolic pressure = 90 mm Hg) with mean systolic pressure 147.4±26 mmHg and mean diastolic pressure 58.8±13.6 mmHg. The complication rates were: ischemic heart disease 39.7%, diabetic foot 75.8% , neuropathy 63.2% , retinopathy 63.2% and micro albuminuria 39%. According to the results, more than half of the diabetic patients had hypertension. It is necessary to inform the patients to control their diabetes in order to prevent its complications.
