Abstract: Ibn Sina (famously known as Avicenna 980-1037 A.D) was a well-known physician, philosopher, encyclopaedist, mathematician and astronomer of his time. He also served as a politician, governor and administrator. His book the Canon of Medicine is one of the most famous books in the history of medicine. Ibn Sina emphasized the importance of anatomy in diagnosis and treatment of diseases. In the study we present an analysis of the contributions made by Avicenna on the anatomy and functions of the vertebra and spine. The descriptions made by Ibn Sina are to a large extend congruent with modern anatomy and its importance in understanding movement and movement disorders of the spine in the modern day.
