Vascularization Pathway Mediated by MicroRNA Is Discovered
Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and colleagues have discovered a critical step for blood vessel growth in zebrafish embryos, providing new insight into how vascular systems develop and offering a potential therapeutic target for preventing tumor growth, which depends on vascularization. The researchers have identified a novel microRNA-mediated genetic pathway responsible for new blood vessel growth (angiogenesis) in zebrafish embryos. The work provides new insights into how vascular systems use the forces of existi...
Camera Traps Yield First-Time Film of Tigress and Cubs
Camera traps deep in the Sumatran jungle have captured first-time images of a rare female tiger and her cubs, giving researchers unique insight into the elusive tiger's behaviour. After a month in operation, specially designed video cameras installed by WWF-Indonesia's researchers seeking to record tigers in the Sumatran jungle caught the mother tiger and her cubs on film as they stopped to sniff and check out the camera trap.

There are as few as 400 Sumatran tigers left in the wild and they are under relentless pressure from poac...

'Fossil' Fireballs from Supernovae Discovered by Suzaku Observatory
This is the first evidence of a new type of supernova remnant -- one that was heated right after the explosion," said Hiroya Yamaguchi at the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research in Japan. A supernova remnant usually cools quickly due to rapid expansion following the explosion. Then, as it sweeps up tenuous interstellar gas over thousands of years, the remnant gradually heats up again.

Capitalizing on the sensitivity of the Suzaku satellite, a team led by Yamaguchi and Midori Ozawa, a graduate student at Kyoto University, d...

RSV Infection In Lungs Blocked By Naturally Occurring Lipid
Researchers at National Jewish Health have discovered that a naturally occurring lipid in the lung can prevent RSV infection and inhibit spread of the virus after an infection is established. RSV is the major cause of hospitalization for children in the first two years of life, and is increasingly recognized as a dangerous pathogen in adults with chronic lung diseases, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. Currently, there is no effective vaccine for the virus.

The findings, published in the The Proceedings of the National...
