Overview and Advances in Arabic Optical Character Recognition

Authors : Najoua Essoukri Ben Amara and Noureddine Ellouze

Abstract: Despite the considerable research efforts, Arabic optical character recognition-AOCR is still far from being solved and remains a big challenge. The recorded results have not reached performances yet as thoroughly as other languages such as Latin, Japanese, or Chinese. This can be assigned to the morphological complexity of the Arabic script and to the lack of both supporting utilities and real world applications.Based on an extensive review of an important number of works on AOCR in its different forms- printed and handwritten- we propose in the first part of this paper an overview of the main problems encountered in this field. In the second part, we shall present a survey of research on AOCR, which would allow the evaluation of advances reached in this challenging field. Besides, this paper gives a rich list of related references to the interested reader.
