Abstract: In this article an attempt has been made to investigate the efficiency of balanced and modified systematic sampling over usual systematic sampling. For this purpose the present study utilizes the number of two artificial populations. The study suggests that balanced systematic sampling is found to be more precise over usual systematic sampling and modified systematic sampling in case of population with linear trend plus random elements. On the other hand modified systematic sampling is found to be highly effective in reducing the error variance of the estimator for the population mean in the case of the population with linear trend and periodic variation
