Abstract: Advances are continuously being made in core enabler technologies of the internet of things. The perceived value of the internet of things and its ability to change the way we live are heralded widely. However, information privacy remains an issue. The privacy concerns of potential consumers can hamper the adoption of the internet of things. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the extent to which the privacy concerns potential consumers have are affected by the benefits the internet of things provides. This research study measured respondent’s privacy concerns before introducing them to potential internet of things applications. Thereafter, privacy concerns are again measured. Results before and after the exposure to an internet of things use case are compared using Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results shows a significant decrease in privacy concerns relating to home and location privacy but are inconclusive regarding body sensors.
