Life and Livelihood Means in Char-Land Areas of Bangladesh A Study on Urir Char of Bay of Bengal

Abstract: The present study is conducted to understand the nature of Char life and livelihood means in coastal Char areas of Bangladesh. The study has conducted on Urir Char located in the Bay of Bengal. The study indicates that the Char people are enjoying a rudimentary life. The people of Urir Char have lost their settlement at least three times in their life. These people residing in Char area due to available fertile agricultural land and opportunity to rear livestock in vast grassy land. They mostly depend on internal resources. But they are with disasters such as, cyclone, salinity intrusion during monsoon season and tidal bore and coastal erosion all over the year. The study reveals that the education and health of Char people is in bad condition. Disaster mitigation measures are very poor in the Char area. The study recommends launching governmental and non-governmental organization proper programs to improve life of Char-people.
