In line with the conventional thoughts on women, this paper recognizes that women constitute a very important social category that deserves adequate attention. In this regard, the role of women in democratization cannot be underestimated. The thrust of this paper is to suggest that their role in democratization should not be limited to mere participation in political governance. There are three issues that are underscored in this suggestion. First, in most cases, the participation of women is gendered and therefore insinuates sex roles rather than democratic roles. Second, women participation in political governance most often undermines resistance to poor political governance. This is in so far as such participants constitute a legitimization of poor political rule. Third and finally, it is important to recognize that any direct or indirect negation of democratization is equally a negation of female gender development. These issues have been undertaken in the context of the Better Life and Family Support Programmes conducted in the Babangida and Abacha regimes in Nigeria respectively. We argue that the Programmes were legitimizations of political rule whose democratic stance remained suspect. Indeed, the political resistance of women is palpable and capable of contributing meaningfully to democratization in Nigeria.
