Abstract: In Mobile Ad hoc Wireless Network (MANET), collecting reliable global topology information is prohibitive. Thus without prior knowledge of network topology, Broadcasting provides an indispensable means of communication in ad hoc networks. However, as radio signals are likely to overlap with others in a geographical area, straightforward broadcasting by flooding usually result in redundant retransmission, contention, and collision, referred to as broadcast storm problem (Ni et al., 1999). A number of routing protocols have been put forward recently to alleviate broadcast storm problem. But all of them either lack reachability and or involves high computational overhead. This paper presents a Gradient Broadcasting Protocol that provides an alternate and improved method of broadcasting with reduced retransmission, high reachability, and low power and bandwidth consumption as shown by the simulation results.
