Agro-Econimic and Social Impact Assessment of Improved Watercourses by Scarp-III (A Case Study of District Sargodha)

Abstract: Majority of the population in Pakistan, who live in rural areas and directly depend upon design, operated and poorly maintained which results in loss of considerably inadequate water. The main objective of this study were, to find out the background characteristics of the farmers, to estimate the increase in irrigation efficiency as a result of water course improvement under SCARP-III programme, to assess the increase in the farm yield and the area under crops, to study cleaning and maintenance procedures on improved watercourse. To suggest some guidelines for the betterment of watercourse and farmers. For the selection of sample of the study, a list of improved watercourses was obtained from office of SCARP-III in Sargodha. Out of this list using simple random method, 10 watercourses were selected from Lalian and 10 from Chiniot. On each of watercourse 3 watercourse association satisfied their position on watercourses i.e. head, middle and tail were selected randomly. A large proportion of respondents were illiterate, 58.3% live in pacca house, major caste was Pajpot, living in joint family system and their primary occupation as agriculture and their family size more than six. A large proportion of respondents pay their contribution from (200-300) Rs. Per acre. Majority of the respondents said that there was no social constraints in T.W.C.S.
