Cooperation Between Cross-Border Regions of Russia and Ukraine in Public Opinion and Expert Appraisal

Abstract: The study presents the process of formation of new cultural and civilizational identities in cross-border regions which reflects the reality emerged after a ‘new frontier’ delimitation. An analysis of possibilities of implementing the European experience in Russian-Ukrainian border zone was carried out. Relations of Russian and Ukrainian cross-border regions in the difficult socio-political situation were studied on the basis of a sociological research. The study reveals main tendencies in development of integration, re-integration and confrontation as well as challenges and prospects of cross-border cooperation as viewed in public opinion and assessed by exerts. The degree of the regions residents’ interest in cross-border cooperation was assessed and the experts’ evaluation of importance of cross-border cooperation for the regions development was analyzed. Potential ways and actors of cross-border cooperation in Central Eastern Europe were determined. The study is written as part of there search project by order No. 2014/2459 for conducting of state work in the field of research within the competitive part of the state order of Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation (coordinator V.P. Babintsev).
