Mineral Nutrition of Grazing Ruminants in Botswana

Authors : A. A. Aganga

Abstract: Nutrient minerals are present in drinking water for ruminants but at concentrations that are generally quite inadequate for meeting daily dietary requirements. Forages contain minerals which rarely can completely satisfy each of mineral requirements for grazing animals. Soil ingestion by grazing animal can contribute a fraction of the mineral requirement. Nutrient minerals need to be provided free choice in salt mixes or salt blocks or mixed in diets in proper amounts. Considerable research needs to be done to evaluate bio-availability of nutrient minerals in forages in Botswana.
